What Genetic Testing Reform Could Mean for Income Protection

A fairer application process may be coming, but policy details still matter

What Genetic Testing Reform Could Mean for Income Protection?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Federal moves to restrict the use of genetic test results in life insurance underwriting have important implications for Australians who are thinking about income protection cover.
The reform is designed to reduce the fear that taking a medically useful genetic test could later make it harder, more expensive or impossible to obtain personal insurance.

For income protection customers, the issue is practical. A person may undertake genetic testing because of family history, medical advice or preventive health planning. If that information can be used unfavourably during underwriting, some people may delay testing or avoid it altogether. A stronger ban would aim to separate health decision-making from insurance access, encouraging people to seek appropriate medical insight without worrying that it will automatically affect future cover.

Income protection insurance is underwritten differently from simple accident-only products. Insurers commonly consider occupation, income, age, medical history, smoking status, hazardous pastimes and previous claims. Genetic information has been a sensitive part of that broader assessment because it may point to a higher future risk rather than a current illness or incapacity. The proposed reform would limit how predictive genetic test results can be used, but it does not remove the need for truthful disclosure of existing diagnoses, symptoms, treatment or other required health information.

This is where consumers need to stay alert. A fairer rule on genetic tests does not mean every application will be automatically accepted, nor does it mean all policies will provide the same value. Waiting periods, benefit periods, exclusions, income definitions and offset clauses can still determine how useful a policy is when illness or injury interrupts earnings. Before applying, it remains sensible to read the product disclosure material and understand the policy terms that may affect a future claim.

The reform may be especially relevant for professionals, self-employed workers and people with family histories of serious illness who have postponed reviewing cover. It may also help reduce confusion between genetic risk, current health status and claim eligibility. However, underwriting will still involve evidence, and benefit amounts will still be linked to insurable income and insurer limits.

For Australians reviewing their financial safety net, the key message is balanced: genetic testing reform could improve confidence in the application process, but it should not replace careful policy comparison. If your income supports a mortgage, rent, children, business expenses or other commitments, take the time to compare income protection insurance options against your real financial needs, not just the headline premium.
